Firefighter's Daily Routine
Every day, Firefighters
have numerous things to complete, along with running calls. The average call
can take from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Paperwork
also has to be completed after each call.
For the most part, each day is the same. The items that
are different from the other days will
be highlighted in red for your convenience. Here is a detailed schedule
of an average Sycamore
Firefighter's day:
- Firefighters arrive at work in the morning between 6:30am and 7:00am
- When we arrive,
we get our personal equipment ready for the day.
- Roll call is taken at shift change. (7:00am)
- Firefighters
will be notified of any information from previous shifts.
- Firefighters will get a quick briefing of the day from
shift Lt.
- Firefighters will check each apparatus. (Fuel, Mileage, Lighting, Oil, Equipment)
- Firefighters
will check/start/run small engines. (Saws, Generators, Fans)
- Firefighters will refuel/clean small engines.
- Firefighters will complete a full Maintenance & Inventory on scheduled apparatus.
- Firefighters will Train. (Preplans, Continuing Education, Physical Training)
- Firefighters will help instruct
KEC class/complete chores*/Train/Physical Training
- Firefighters will use the rest of
the time to complete unfinished tasks above.
*Maintenance & Inventory-
Maintenance & Inventory is a scheduled task for certain apparatus'. The exception is Tuesdays.
Every Tuesday, ambulances get a full maintenance & inventory, as well as the application of a
disinfectant.
* Chores -
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday chores consist of sweeping/mopping/dusting
apparatus
bay. Clean bathrooms, take out garbage.
Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday
chores consist of cleaning upstairs (living quarters). Cleaning
will involve cleaning kitchen,
sweeping/mopping, dusting, vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms, and
emptying garbage.
* We are afforded morning,
lunch, and afternoon breaks.
* Schedules are also pending, due to Fire/EMS calls, additional meetings,
tours, station assignments,
Chief(s) assignments, and Lieutenant(s) assignments.
